I think Mitch McConnell said what he said, because he is the Republican leader. I'm sure the heads of the party got together and guffawed about it as they smoked their Cuban cigars and drank their 30 year old scotch in one of their hideaways in the Capitol building and they decided they have to come down hard on Craig or they'll lose their base. The whole thing's a joke. McConnell is married, by the way, to the Secretary of Labor.
